Harry Potter is known as a hero of the wizarding world, and the "Boy Who Lived". His defeat of Voldemort on October 31, 1981 (at the age of one) left him as an orphan living with a muggle family until the age of eleven, when he started attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is said to have his mother's eyes (green) and his father's looks (messy black hair), and has a lightning bolt shaped scar that hurts when he senses Voldemort.

To date, Harry has exhibited a skill of Parseltongue (the ability to speak snake language), a certain amount of wandless magic (although this may be due to lack of training), and is a natural at flying.

This question is debateable, since Harry has shown a natural aptitude for the Defense Against the Dark Arts, but does not apply himself to subjects like Divination or History of Magic. It is possible he is a better student in Potions than Professor Snape allows him to be, but overall, Harry appears to be an average student.

Due to the nature of the sacrifice Harry's mother Lily made when she died to protect him, Harry is safe from Voldemort when he stays with someone who shares his mother's blood. This happens to be Petunia Dursley, so Harry is required to stay with her each summer. Once his birthday arrives (July 31), he is apparently free to leave to stay with the Weasleys, at Diagon Alley, or wherever he'd like in the wizarding world.

Harry is well known to everyone but his closest friends are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Over time he has become friends with Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood.

Besides Lord Voldemort, Harry generally needs to watch his back around most Slytherins, especially Draco Malfoy. As far as faithful minions go, Voldemort's Death Eaters are prepared to finish the work of their master by bringing Harry to him so that Voldemort may kill Harry.

Hermione Granger is the oldest, according to JK Rowling. Harry is the youngest.

London is home to many magical places, including Diagon Alley (via the Leaky Cauldron), Kings Cross Station, the Museum of Quidditch, 12 Grimmauld Place, the Ministry of Magic, and St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

Accessible through the Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley is where many Hogwarts students (and other witches and wizards) get supplies. It is a street of shops selling wands, cauldrons, broomsticks, robes and other magical paraphernalia. Shops include: Gambol and Japes, a junk shop, Knockturn Alley, Obscurus Books, Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes, Magical Menangerie, Wizzhard Books, the Apothecary, Eeylops' Owl Emporium, Flourish & Blotts, Gringotts Bank, Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions, Ollivanders and Quality Quidditch Supplies.

Hogwarts is where wizards go to school for secondary education (ages 11-17). It is a boarding school set in a castle surrounded by a lake and a dark forest.

According to JK Rowling, Hogwarts is located in Scotland.

Students reach the school by taking the Hogwarts Express to Hogsmeade, then taking either "horseless" carriages (they are pulled by creatures called Thestrals that are invisible to most people) or in the case of first year students, by taking boats across the lake.

Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.

The school was founded by four very prominent wizards a thousand years ago.

The motto is "Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus," meaning "never tickle a sleeping dragon".

The school's current headmaster is Albus Dumbledore. The Deputy Headmistress is Minerva McGonagall.

The school operates by dividing the students into four houses after they arrive for their first year. Each house is named after one of the four founders (see related question) and serves as home to the student. Once a student is in a house, they remain in it during their entire time at Hogwarts. Hogwarts operates on a point system for houses, and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the House Cup.

The Sorting Hat appears each year to sort the first year students into houses. Before it sorts, it sings a new song each year about the school.

Professors can take and give points, Quidditch matches affect house points, and prefects are possibly allowed to dock points from their own house but not others (it's not totally clear). No maximum or minimum point limits have been computed to date.

Points are kept track of by house colored gems in hourglasses. Gryffindors have rubies, Slytherins have emeralds, and Ravenclaws use sapphires.

Plenty, apparently. Harry was set to go into Slytherin, and Hermione was considered for Ravenclaw. Both ended up in Gryffindor.

Each Sorting Song describes the school's founders, the qualities/traits of each House and the sorting process. During the trio's fifth year it "branched out a bit" and also gave the school some advice. Nearly Headless Nick was about to explain when the last time that sort of thing happened but was interrupted.

Not always. Generally yes, if the Weasleys are any indication. Notably, the Patil twins were separated during Sorting, so family lineage is definitely not a guarantee of house placement.

The Hat puts people where they are supposed to be, even if the qualities valued in that particular house are not readily apparent at the time.

Nearby village to Hogwarts, Hogsmeade is where students take day trips and can find a variety of shops. Third year students and older are permitted to visit the village as long as they have a signed permission slip from their parent or guardian. It is the only entirely non-Muggle settlement in Britain. Notable locations include Dervish and Banges, Gladrags, High Street, Hog's Head, Hogsmeade Station, Honeydukes, Madame Puddifoot's, Post Office, Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop, Shrieking Shack, The Three Broomsticks and Zonkos.

The train is a central part of a student's journey to and from Hogwarts.

The train travels from Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station to Hogsmeade Station.

The train leaves at eleven o'clock in the morning sharp, every year on September first.

For witches and wizards who have not packed a lunch, food for sale includes pumpkin pasties, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, Chocolate Frogs, Cauldron Cakes, Licorice Wands, and pumpkin juice to drink.

Given the number of hexes and pranks pulled on the rides back to Kings Cross, probably not. The Head Boy and Head Girl are expected to patrol at the beginning of the year, as well as hold a meeting for all prefects. Professor Lupin is the only professor we have seen on the train.

If the train leaves London at eleven, reaching Hogsmeade by nightfall, it is likely the trip takes most of the day, and at the minimum, all afternoon.

Azkaban is the prison of the wizarding world, and is guarded by dementors. Generally reserved for the worst crimes, using an unforgivable will earn the wizard or witch an automatic life sentence.

It is stated that Azkaban is located "In the north of the North Sea. A very cold sea."

He changed into his animagi form (a dog), slipped past the dementors, and swam.

Not really, no. Barty Crouch Jr. also escaped. He used polyjuice potion to took the form of his dying mother, changed places with her, and walked out.

Azkaban is still considered to be a maximum security prison, however with Lord Voldemort's return, it is felt the dementors are more sympathetic and thus allowed ten Death Eaters to escape in Harry's fifth year.

Dementors are floating black cloaked creatures with gray, slimy, scabbed claw-like hands. They are designed to feed off of and entirely consume a person's happiness so that nothing is left but a depressed, hollow shell. Most people go crazy or suicidal after prolonged exposure to dementors. Chocolate helps after encounters, and dementors can be fought off with a concentrated burst of happiness known as the Patronus spell.

Gringotts is a snowy white building that towers over the others in Diagon Alley with burnished bronze doors. It is the only known wizarding bank.

Gringotts is staffed by goblins. The secure vaults are deeply underground.

There has only been one noted break in here, and it occurred immediately before Harry's first year at Hogwarts.

Wizarding money comes in Galleons (gold), Sickles (silver), and Knuts (bronze). The approximate value of a Galleon is five pounds, there are twenty-nine Knuts to a Sickle, and there are seventeen sickles in a Galleon.

O.W.L. stands for Ordinary Wizarding Levels. These are exams taken at the end of the fifth year. The grades given are O (Outstanding), E (Exceeds Expectations), A (Acceptable), P (Poor), D (Dreadful), T (Troll).

N.E.W.T. stands for Nastilly Evil Wizarding Tests, the exams held at the end of seventh year. The results often determine what wizarding jobs you qualify for.

Educational Decrees were most often referred to during Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts, when a series of them were passed in an attempt to make life just a bit more challenging at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Yes. We encounter two other schools in Goblet of Fire, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. According to Hermione, Durmstrang focuses on the Dark Arts (from An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe).

Although no wizarding primary schools are mentioned, it is possible many of them are home tutored. Muggle-born students go to muggle schools before they attend Hogwarts.

Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Astronomy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Herbology, History of Magic, Muggle Studies, Potions, and Transfiguration. Flying lessons are given to first years.

In the case of Muggle parents, special messengers are sent to explain everything to them. But don't forget that they will have noticed that there's something strange about their child for the previous ten years, so it won't come as a complete bolt from the blue.

According to JKR: "I see him primarily as someone who would be self-taught. However, he in his time had access to superb teachers at Hogwarts, so he was educated in the same way that everyone else is educated. Dumbledore's family would be a profitable line of inquiry, more profitable than sweet wrappers."

Sure thing. Wizards have many publications to choose from, although not as many as in the muggle world. While it is presumed that wizards could get muggle newspapers and periodicals, those who live in all wizarding areas are unlikely to do so. Muggles cannot get wizarding periodicals, however. Newspapers include Witch Weekly and the Daily Prophet, with daily, evening, and Sunday editions. Magazines include the Quibbler, Transfiguration Today, and Which Broomstick? Miscellaneous periodicals include comic The Adventures of Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle, play Helias, Je me suis Transfigure Les Pieds, and training by mail Kwikspell, A Correspondence Course in Beginner's Magic.

The Daily Prophet is considered independent, but heavily influenced by the Ministry of Magic. Students at Hogwarts can get subscriptions delivered.

The Quibbler is known as the main "alternative" paper and contains sensationalized items that may or may not contain bits of truth. Generally mocked (but well read all the same), the magazine appears to come out monthly and is run by Mr. Lovegood (Luna's father). It is the first to publish Harry's version of what happened at the end of the Triwizard Tournament.

The Ministry of Magic is home to the ruling structure of the wizarding world.

Currently, the Minister of Magic is Cornelius Oswald Fudge, although it is likely he will be departing shortly.

The Ministry of Magic entrance is an old telephone box.

A Squib is a person born to magical parents, but has no natural magical talents.

Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley live at Number 4, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey. They are a muggle family who takes Harry in as a baby and raise him (although the quality of the upbringing has been questioned by many). Vernon Dursley works at Grunnings Drills. Petunia is the sister of Lily Evans (Harry Potter's mother). Dudley is a year and a little bit older than Harry, and attends a boys school called Smeltings.

Marge Dursley is Vernon's sister. She raises bulldogs and is generally a stereotypical closed-minded irritating "Muggle".

The extent of Petunia's knowledge is unclear, however given her knowledge about dementors and Azkaban, it is apparent that she knows much more than she has ever let on the entire time Harry has been growing up.

The tapestry looked immensely old; it was faded and looked as though doxies had gnawed it in places; nevertheless, the golden thread with which it was embroidered still glinted brightly enough to show them a sprawling family tree dating back (as far as Harry could tell) to the Middle Ages. The Bones family is a small family with high standing in the wizard community. Amelia Bones, Susan's aunt, is Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and presides over the Wizengamot. Her niece Susan is a Hufflepuff in Harry's year, and her brother Edgar was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix.

The Crouch family plays a significant role in Goblet of Fire. Bartemius (Barty) Crouch Sr. worked for the Ministry of Magic and was on the fast track to become Minister of Magic until his son was revealed to be a Death Eater. Winky is the Crouch family house elf.

Harry first meets fellow student Cedric Diggory (Hufflepuff) during a match. They both compete in the Triwizard Tournament. Amos Diggory, Cedric's father, works for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Not much is known about the Lestrange family, other than Bellatrix Black married into the family via Rodolphus. The couple, plus Rodolphus' brother Rastaban are known as Death Eaters.

The Longbottom family is a pureblooded family. Neville Longbottom is a classmate of Harry's. He has been raised by his grandmother ("Gran") since his parents were incapacitated by Death Eaters and sent to St. Mungo's. Neville's parents, Alice and Frank Longbottom were members of the original Order of the Phoenix and Aurors. Relatives include Great Uncle Algie and Great Aunt Enid - Algie likes to provide Neville with interesting magical things like his toad Trevor and the Mimbuls Mimbletonia plant. A tawny owl serves as post for the family.

That was also asked of me this morning. That idea was one of the very few that was inspired by a real event. I was told what, to me, was a very sad story by someone I know about their elderly mother who had Alzheimer's, and the elderly mother was in a closed ward. She was very severely demented and no longer recognized her son, but he went faithfully to visit her twice a week, and he used to take her sweets. That was their point of connection; she had a sweet tooth, she recognized him as the sweet-giver. That was very poignant to me. So I embroidered the story. Neville gives his mother what she wants, and (it makes me sad to think of it) she wants to give something back to him, but what she gives back to him is essentially worthless. But he still takes it as worth something because she's trying to give, so it does mean something, in emotional terms.

She's not trying to pass him secret messages.

Alice and Frank Longbottom earned Voldemort's ire because they were such "efficient" Aurors, and "were responsible for a lot of captures and arrests and imprisonments."

Neville's family "just wanted him to match up" but it was "an impossible standard."

The Malfoy family is very powerful, and believed to be incredibly rich. Aligned with the Dark magics, Lucius Malfoy is a Death Eater. His wife Narcissa has not seen great visibility, although she has been promised a larger role in Half Blood Prince and possibly beyond. Draco Malfoy is their only child, and a nemesis to Harry. An eagle owl serves as the family messenger.

Harry Potter's family is small, and by and large, deceased. Harry's parents are Lily (Evans) Potter and James Potter, and they both attended Hogwarts as Gryffindor students. Harry's parents compiled a small fortune before being killed by Voldemort, and it is through these funds Harry can pay for school supplies. The family used to reside in Godric's Hollow. Wizards often state Harry looks just like his father but has his mother's green eyes (believed to be very significant).

Popular theories regarding the Potter family include them being related to Godric Gryffindor, or possibly Bowman Wright (inventor of the Snitch) to explain the vast fortune Harry was left. We also do not know what his parents did for a living after leaving Hogwarts, only that they were members of the Order of the Phoenix.

This takes us into more mundane territory. As a writer, it was more interesting, plot-wise, if Harry was completely alone. So I rather ruthlessly disposed of his entire family apart from Aunt Petunia. I mean, James and Lily are massively important to the plot, of course, but the grandparents? No. And, because I do like my backstory: Petunia and Lily's parents, normal Muggle death. James's parents were elderly, were getting on a little when he was born, which explains the only child, very pampered, had-him-late-in-life-so-he's-an-extra-treasure, as often happens, I think. They were old in wizarding terms, and they died. They succumbed to a wizarding illness. That's as far as it goes. There's nothing serious or sinister about those deaths. I just needed them out of the way so I killed them.

They were killed on October 31, 1981. Voldemort turned up in Godric's Hollow where they lived. The Potters were actually in hiding, and everyone believed that Sirius Black was the Secret-Keeper. What people didn't know was that the Potters switched Secret-Keepers at the last minute and used Peter Pettigrew, who in turn betrayed them to Voldemort.

The Weasley family is headed by Arthur and Molly Weasley. Noted for flaming red hair and "more children than they can afford" (but only to some), they provide Harry Potter with a surrogate family that makes up quickly for the lack of warmth of the Dursleys. Ron Weasley is one of Harry Potter's best friends (Hermione Granger being the other). All the Weasleys have attended Hogwarts, and all of them have been in Gryffindor.

He works at the Ministry of Magic, Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office. Arthur Weasley is facinated with Muggles.

It is presumed Molly Weasley is a full time homemaker, due to the fact no other or side jobs have been mentioned.

The backstory with Ginny was, she was the first girl to arrive in the Weasley family in generations, but there's that old tradition of the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter and a seventh son of a seventh son, so that's why she's the seventh, because she is a gifted witch. I think you get hints of that, because she does some pretty impressive stuff here and there, and you'll see that again.

Well, no, not really, because the plan was, which I really hope I fulfilled, is that the reader, like Harry, would gradually discover Ginny as pretty much the ideal girl for Harry. She's tough, not in an unpleasant way, but she's gutsy. He needs to be with someone who can stand the demands of being with Harry Potter, because he's a scary boyfriend in a lot of ways. He's a marked man. I think she's funny, and I think that she's very warm and compassionate. These are all things that Harry requires in his ideal woman. But, I felt - and I'm talking years ago when all this was planned - initially, she's terrified by his image. I mean, he's a bit of a rock god to her when she sees him first, at 10 or 11, and he's this famous boy. So Ginny had to go through a journey as well. And rather like with Ron, I didn't want Ginny to be the first girl that Harry ever kissed. That's something I meant to say, and it's kind of tied in.

One of the ways in which I tried to show that Harry has done a lot of growing up - in "Phoenix," remember when Cho comes into the compartment, and he thinks, 'I wish I could have been discovered sitting with better people,' basically? He's with Luna and Neville. So literally the identical thing happens in "Prince," and he's with Luna and Neville again, but this time, he has grown up, and as far as he's concerned he is with two of the coolest people on the train. They may not look that cool. Harry has really grown. And I feel that Ginny and Harry, in this book, they are total equals. They are worthy of each other. They've both gone through a big emotional journey, and they've really got over a lot of delusions, to use your word, together. So, I enjoyed writing that. I really like Ginny as a character.
